Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

The love affair of Taylor and Burton has to be the most tempestuous and passionate in Hollywood history. Not since Romeo and Juliet has a love affair paid such a price. Both married to other people, they ended their relationships and married just nine days after Taylor’s divorce was finalised. The affair became a scandal - in the 1960s marriage was still a respected institution. But their passion was undeniable, and Burton proposed to Taylor, not with a wedding ring but reportedly with a pendant, platinum-set with an emerald surrounded by diamonds. Extravagance was a natural part of the couples larger than life love and Burton went on to buy a platinum set diamond ring before their wedding was annulled and the couple divorced in 1974.

But they couldn’t stay away. “She is my everything - my breath, my blood, my mind and my imagination.” Burton said of Elizabeth. They remarried the following year but divorced a year later. They couldn’t live with or without each other. Burton died in 1984, and Taylor is said to want her ashes scattered in Burton’s homeland, Wales.

King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson is perhaps the most notorious royal love story - the King chose his heart over his throne. It was a love affair that crossed the Atlantic. The King proposed to the American in 1936 with a platinum engagement ring and their wedding was a year later. Edward had been King for just 325 days before he proposed and was forced to give up the throne. No members of the royal family attended the wedding and they were forced into exile. Alongside the platinum wedding ring from their engagement, Edward gave Wallis a ‘marriage bracelet’ featuring a cluster of sapphires and a wide diamond set in platinum. The couple are now buried alongside each other at Windsor Castle.
