Congratulations to the Groom and Groom!

Congratulations to the Groom and Groom!

Celebrity weddings mean big bucks and we’re all so nosey wanting to see the dress. Kim Kardashian televised her marriage to Kris Humphries in 2011 and Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas’ wedding in 2000 was such a big deal that someone sold unauthorised photos of the pair on their big day. With same sex marriages in the UK becoming legalised in March 2014, here at the Platinum Ring Company we thought we’d take a look back at the most lavish celebrity same sex marriages of the past few years. Do you remember these events taking place?

Michael Kors and Lance LePere

The famous fashion designer and Project Runway judge married his long time love of 21 years in 2011. The couple met when LePere joined Kors’ company as an intern and have been together ever since. Kors said, "Lance and I are very excited to finally be able to have the opportunity to marry in our home state after many years together. We have no plans for a major party, but we will be getting married privately." Despite saying they did not have big plans the couple wed with a destination ceremony at the extremely exclusive Dune Beach in Southampton, NY officiated by the town’s mayor. Kors further commented, "To marry someone as wonderful and special to me as Lance barefoot on a glorious beach is more than I could have dreamed of."

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

One of the most well-known lesbian married couples, DeGeneres and de Rossi tied the knot at their LA home in 2008 in front of their closest friends and family. The ceremony was said to be beautiful with hundreds of candles and elegant flowers by Mark’s Garden. Both brides wore Zac Posen designs and lounged on a pillow scattered floor while their author friend Wayne Dyer officiated. The rings chosen to be exchanged were said to match de Rossi’s 3 carat pink pave diamond ring that she was given on their engagement.

Sir Elton John and David Furnish

One of the most lavish celebrations of matrimony came from Elton John and his partner of 12 years David Furnish. The couple married in 2005 in a 20 minute private civil partnership ceremony in Windsor Guildhall the same place the Prince of Wales married Camilla Parker Bowles. The pair wore dark black morning suits and got their pet spaniel Arthur involved too! The reception cost a reported £1 million and was held in 2 huge white tents on the grounds of their Windsor mansion. The tents were filled with vintage pink champagne and lamb for their 700 guests. And the couple’s vanilla and appley ever after the cake was made by Ben & Jerry’s and was topped by two figurines of tin soldiers in guardsmen helmets. Rather than receive wedding gifts the couple asked for donations to be made to the Elton John Aids Foundation. It is rumoured that the couple are set to renew their vows when same sex marriage becomes legal in the UK. With ceremonies both in England and LA, we’re sure these occasions will be even more show stopping. Take inspiration from John and Furnish’s wedding and take a look at our men’s platinum rings. You’re sure to find something to rival that of the stars.

George Takei and Brad Altman

In 2008 Star Trek’s George Takei married his long-time partner Brad Altman. The couple had been together for over 20 years before tying the knot which Altman described as “a dream come true”. Their ceremony was a multicultural organza at the Japanese American National Museum with a Buddhist priest, Native American wedding rings and a Japanese Koto harp. There were even bagpipes! The pair were dressed in matching white suit jackets with black trousers and said their ‘I do’s’ while surrounded by a circle of yellow roses and lilies. They incorporated a Japanese tea ceremony into the proceedings and of course Broadway with ‘One Singular Sensation’ from A Chorus Line. Are you planning a big day when the law changes? Send us some photos - we’d love to hear your wedding story!
