It’s tricky deciding on how to spread the good news. Here are a few tips on how to do it.

Face-to-Face

Breaking the news to your parents and future in-laws in person is always preferable; a text simply won’t do. Why? Well, it’s mainly a generation thing. Texting or broadcasting this special news on Facebook seems thoughtless to the older generation. Your parents and future in-laws want to know first, not at the same time as friends and acquaintances! And, can you blame them? They did bring you up after all. Be sure to tell your parents first, and in person. Go as a couple to visit each set of parents so they can congratulate the both of you. They’re going to want to hug you and make a fuss; they may even suggest going for a drink or dinner right away! Not only is this the most respectable route, you’ll also be able to see your parents’ reactions, which let’s face it, is half the fun of telling them. If you’re not near enough to drop in then a phone call is the next best option.

By Phone

As already mentioned, this is the next most personal way to tell family and friends, particularly if they don’t live nearby. As much as it’d be nice to tell all of your immediate family about your engagement in person, it’s hardly practical to book flights to visit those who live in far-flung corners of the world,  just to tell them of your news. So, give them a call instead. They’ll be delighted that you have taken the time to personally call them and break the news, rather them finding out from other family members or word of mouth. However, it may not be ideal to call everyone. To determine whose numbers to dial, ask yourself if the individual in question would be offended if you didn’t contact them.

On Social Media

Social media is a popular way for people to share many moments including holiday pictures, getting the keys for a new home and of course, breaking the news of a proposal. However, only use Facebook and other social media sites to break the news to inform casual acquaintances. Before you hit ‘share’ be sure to double check that you have notified everyone who deserves a more formal approach to avoid hurting their feelings. So, now you know how to successfully tell your friends and family of your engagement. Once you’ve broken the news, you’ll no doubt want to get cracking on the wedding planning.
